Excerpt from A History of the Congregational Churches: In the United States

The great teachers of the medieval church had uniformly held that the Bible is the ultimate source of religious au thority. But it was not the Bible interpreted by the in dividual. No thought fundamental to the Roman Empire had been more impressed on the minds of men than that of visible, external unity-a unity finding expression in a uniform system of government, a uniform body of law, and a visible, earthly head. This great Roman imperial con ception had produced the medieval papacy; it produced also in the political world the far less efficient, but no less assertive, Holy Roman Empire. For such a body, char acterized by such external marks of unity, an authorita tive exposition of that which it claimed as its fundamental law, the Bible, was imperatively necessary. That expo sitiou was believed to be set forth by the church itself, speaking through tradition, the consensus of its fathers and doctors, the decrees of its popes, and especially through general councils. All these made a mass of authority which, though professedly subordinate to the Word of God and merely interpretative of it, really, if not theoret ically, put it in the background; and substituted for a direct appeal to its prescriptions, a mass of exposition, the slow growth of centuries, which buttressed an elaborate sys tem of doctrine, polity, and ceremonial. Itself the result of gradual accretion through nearly a millennium and a half of years.

It is hoped that the Directory of the Church and Congregation will be widely useful, at least in facilitating the business and promoting the social life of the Church. Persons changing their residence will confer a favor by giving prompt notice thereof to the Pastor in writing.

In the details doubtless errors will from time to time be discovered. They should be reported in writing promptly to the Clerk of the Church.

In publishing his Journal, Letters, and other manuscripts, no attempt has been made to correct their faulty style; but they are printed, in the main, as they were originally written. In some few instances, where his words were illegible, or very obscure, the biographer has inserted, within brackets, the terms or phrases which seemed to express the idea intended in the origi nal manuscript.

Excerpt from Articles of Faith, and Covenant, Adopted by the First Congregational Church in Concord, New-Hampshire: June 1, 1826

You believe, that there is one true god, the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost: that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament were given by Divine Inspiration, and contain the only perfect rule of and practice that (361) maintains a righteous government over all creatures that Man has fallen from the state in which he was or1g1nally created, and is by nature entirely destitute of holiness: that an Atonement for sin has been made by the Lord Jesus Christ, so that repentm ance and faith are now the conditions of salvation You believe in the necessity of our being renewed by the agency of the' Holy Spirit in the increase in holiness, and perseverance unto salvation, of all who truly believe; in the doctrine of a general resurrection, and a future judgment; in the everlasting blessedness of the righteous, and the endless punishment of all' the finally impenitent.

Excerpt from The American Anti-Slavery Society at War With the Church: A Discourse, Delivered Before the First Congregational Church and Society, in Canterbury, Conn;, June 30th, 1844

John xvi. 2. - Yea, the time will come, when whosoever killeth you will think ho doeth God service.

At the last anniversary of the American Anti-slavery Society, held in New York, May 7th, 1844, the following Resolutions were presented and passed.

"Whereas no institution is more hostile to the Anti-slavery movement, than the professedly Christian Church in this country; and whereas, from her permanent position, her high professions, her deep hold upon the affections of the people, and her immense influence, she ought to be first among the foremost in the ranks of freedom: and whereas, by continuing our connection with so base an institution, we do thereby surround the system of American Slavery with holy sanction, and entrench it behind religious bulwarks; therefore

"Resolved, As the deliberate opinion of this Society, that it is the duty of every true abolitionist, to withdraw entirely from the support of said institution, and to hold her up before the people, as hypocritical in profession, infamous in practice, as having usurped the name of Christian Church, and as being one of the greatest obstacles in the way of immediate emancipation."

"Resolved, That fourteen years of warfare against the slave power, have convinced us that every act done in support of the American Union, rivets the chains of the Slave, - that the only exodus of the Slave to freedom, unless it be one of blood must be over the ruins of the present American Church, and the grave of the present Union."

Have we not already enough of good biographies? Perhaps some one may ask, as he very leisurely takes up this volume. The question shall speedily be answer ed. But first let a preparatory question or two be put to this inquirer. Have you, then, already become ao quainted with as many good men as you wish to know? - and is there not much of the same benefit and pleasure to be derived from enlarging our acquaint ance with the lives of the departed, as of those who are still with us - and may it not be done with greater facility - dre there, then, enough of good biographies already? No, we have not enough nor shall we have, so long as God shall continue to raise up the fit subjects of such works. History, says an ancient, is philosophy teaching by example. Much more emphatically is this true of biography - the life and soul of history. The more fit examples for this purpose, the better. Each one has something new to teach, or to impress more vividly; and each has its special relations to particular circles and classes of men.

Excerpt from Christian Discipleship and Baptism: Being Eight Lectures in Reply to the Theory Advanced by Dr. Halley in the Congregational Lecture of 1843

Had any suspicion rested on the lawfulness of yielding to this tendency, the strong combining influ ence of Christian principles in mankind would have called for extreme watchfulness and self-denial but the Lord has spared his people from any such restraint: he has written his command to love one another with as much clearness as can be given to any form of words whatever. To indulge the love of union is, therefore, in the body of Christ, converted into positive duty.

Excerpt from History of the South Congregational Church, New Haven: From Its Origin in 1852 Till January 1, 1865

Thus, in one way or another, the projectors of the South Church enterprise met with discouragement at every step. The first idea was, to have a Mission Chapel, erected by subscription, and free to all. But on this basis there would be no revenue, and a con stant outlay would be required to support the minis ter and defray other necessary expenses.
