I write, if you like, for the unknown reader. The first of these purposes, the
liberation from an intolerable tension, is one which Michaux has emphasized
several times. It is almost identical with Eliot's statement, in The Use of Poetry and
the Use of Criticism, that writing a poem is to him « a sudden relief from an
intolerable burden. » The insolence with which Michaux states his position arises
not from any indifference to literature, but from a sense of its awe-striking,
mysterious power.
